First Farmers' Market of 2016

It was an absolutely gorgeous Saturday morning in Southern Illinois. Cool, but sunny. The wind was a little bit crazy, but that didn't stop me one bit from heading out to the first day of the Carbondale Farmers' Market for the season! It was a full market... both in the way of vendors and customers. Thankfully, one of my very favorite vendors, Jen's Joe, was on hand to serve her hot, wonderfully roasted coffee. I paired that with a perfectly not-too-sweet Cherry Pastry from a vendor I hadn't yet seen at the market (I think I've always managed to come on days she's not there), Oma Gisi's German Bakery. I came home with some Grau Brot (Sourdough Rye Bread) from her as well. It's been delicious the past couple days for sandwiches, or just plain with butter.

I also came home with 4 new succulents to plant in my shallow succulent pot; spring lettuce mix, beautiful daffodils, and fresh eggs! It was a well spent morning and I've been enjoying my purchases every day since.

I had ventured out with friends Saturday morning; so after the market, we hit Hobby Lobby and the local bookstore on the way to lunch. I was slightly horrified they had never visited The Bookworm, so we stopped by to browse and say hello to Casper, the lazy bookstore cat (to which he is lovingly referred).

It was such a lovely day! I did refrain from picking up tomato and pepper plants. We have a couple more frost chances this week, so I plan to head back to the farmers' market in a week or two for plants and, hopefully, more of Oma Gisi's baked goods and Jen's Joe!
Shopping and supporting local businesses is something about which I am passionate. Carbondale is a wonderful town that cultivates this "shop local" atmosphere and the farmers' market and The Bookworm are just two small pieces of that local culture. I challenge you to get out and enjoy the local artisans and shops in your own area; I promise you will leave refreshed and creatively stimulated to begin your own projects at home.
